Inside the bunkers and abandoned stores it really feels like the end of the world. His conversations with Finch, played by Tom Hanks, are inquisitive, full of heart, but also laughable at times. He is like a child who is learning about the world, sucking it all in, and he makes mistakes. While Finch is clearly a drama, there is some humor in here too. Caleb Landry Jones also gets to showcase his talents here as a voice actor, and most certainly has a future in it. He is teaching this robot about humanity, and it is truly touching. However, with the added chemistry between him and Caleb Landry Jones who voices Jeff, this movie becomes about so much more. He feels so human, with the way his emotions change so quickly at times. He is one of the best actors, especially in dramatic roles, and it audiences will be in awe watching him work in this movie. He carries it with his long monologues and conversations with his dog and robot. Tom Hanks is at the forefront of this film. Because of this, Finch is easily relatable. Humans are not caring for the Earth as we should, so some kind of environmental apocalypse feels right around the corner sometimes. The crazy thing about this movie is it seems like this is a story that could actually happen, and that is a bit scary. It touches on a dying world, and how humans have reacted to it, but at the core it is a man and his dog and his robot. As certain, tiny details are revealed, this film becomes more and more powerful. Viewers will likely turn this on for Tom Hanks, but stay for the tale that is so wonderfully woven throughout these two hours. The pest part about Finch is the story and just how heartwarming it is. In the end though, Tom Hanks is the one that carries this movie, and truly showcases his incredible talent. This leads to some funny moments, that help to break up this slow burn drama. So he builds Jeff, an innocent robot who has a lot to learn about life, humanity, and this new world, very quickly. There are underlying lessons of trust, friendship, parenting, and the environment, but ultimately this is a story about love and humanity. A slow burn, but worth it in the end.įinch is a heartwarming film that perfectly showcases Tom Hanks’ talent, considering he is pretty much the only human in this entire, two hour long, movie. The connection between the three of them ends up being a really solid triangle as opposed to master and servant kind of relationship."įinch will be released on Apple TV+ on Friday, November 5.Finch is a touching film that showcases just how incredibly talented Tom Hanks is. "Jeff is learning because of his company with Finch himself, and the friendship that comes out of him is much more powerful than he anticipated. That's a long emotional beat to play and there is the new, added friendship that he accrues from Jeff. "From the get-go, he is staying alive long enough to guarantee that his dog does not die with him. That's a reality that Finch carries with him that we find out about in the course of this film. "People have asked me, 'Hey what's that movie about?' and I say it's about a guy who builds a robot to take care of his dog after he passes on. The thing that we were always dealing with in Finch was that he had this knowledge that his days were numbered," Hanks noted. "I can't compare these things because everybody comes along on its own time. So how does it compare to previous emotional moments in his career to date, such as the classic ending from Toy Story 3? "He is going to stay alive as long as possible because he has to love that dog, take care of that dog and see to it that that dog survives."Īs Hanks points out, Finch is about the titular robotic engineer who creates a robot called Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones) to watch over his dog Goodyear when Finch no longer can as he fears he might be dying.Įven from that synopsis, you'd be forgiven for crying already. At no time in this is Finch willing to sacrifice his life because it's miserable or there's a risk he has to take. "There is also a moment in Cast Away where he's willing to sacrifice his life in order to get off that island. There is no island to get off of in Finch and there is company that is built into it, so the desire and emotional, philosophical structure of Finch is very different. "In Cast Away, which was an important movie for me, it was about the discovery of what was needed in order to live a full life and that was company and getting off that island.
